Your safety is paramount. Follow this comprehensive guide to stay safe when your vehicle breaks down on UK roads.
If you or anyone else is in immediate danger, call 999 immediately. If you've broken down on a highway or smart highway, use the nearest emergency phone to alert traffic officers - they'll locate you faster than a mobile call.
Immediately activate your hazard warning lights to alert other drivers. Keep them on until help arrives.
If your vehicle is still operational and it's safe to do so, move to the hard shoulder, rest area, or off the main roadway immediately.
All passengers should exit via the passenger side (away from traffic). Never cross the roadway on foot.
Move well away from the vehicle and traffic - ideally behind a barrier or on an embankment at least 10 meters back.
If possible, reach the hard shoulder or emergency refuge area (marked with blue signs). Position your vehicle as far left as safely possible.
ALL occupants must exit via the passenger side (left side - away from traffic). Never exit on the driver's side facing traffic.
Move to a safe position well away from the roadway - ideally behind the barrier and up the embankment.
If available, use the orange emergency roadside phone (SOS). These connect directly to traffic control and automatically provide your location.
Once safe, book your recovery service. Do NOT attempt to fix the vehicle on the highway.
• Do NOT stay in your vehicle - Highway collisions happen frequently on hard shoulders
• Do NOT stand on the driver's side - 70mph traffic is 5 meters away
• Do NOT attempt repairs - Even changing a wheel is extremely dangerous
• Do NOT cross the roadway on foot - This is illegal and potentially fatal
• Do NOT let children or pets out unsupervised - Keep everyone behind the barrier
If you break down in a live lane on a smart highway, this is EXTREMELY dangerous. Try to reach an Emergency Refuge Area (ERA) if possible. If not:
1. Turn on hazard lights immediately
2. Call 999 - inform them you're in a live lane
3. If safe to exit, do so via passenger side and get behind barrier
4. If unsafe to exit, stay in vehicle with seatbelt on until police arrive
ERAs are marked by blue signs every 1.5 miles maximum.
